Outdoor Workers Run High Risk for Skin Cancer – Special Screening Available Through Mobile Health of Evangelical

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, and most cases are preventable.

Outdoor workers experience several hazards as they earn their living. One hazard that is very prevalent but often overlooked is repeated exposure to the sun. While outdoor jobs require workers to experience sun exposure, skin cancer prevention is available to these workers.

Mobile Health of Evangelical is offering a special skin cancer screening for outside workers with skin cancer concerns on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 9 am to noon. Being held at Green Ridge Country Market, 811 Forest Hill Road, Mifflinburg, these on-the-scene, clothed screenings will focus on key areas associated with sun exposure such as the head, face, neck, hands, arms, and legs.

Participants should wear loose fitting clothing that allows Dr. Keyser the ability to view the areas that are exposed to daily sun during the workday. Dr. Keyser will help identify areas that may need immediate attention and other areas to watch for changes.

Skin cancer screens are opportunities for a medical professional to view marks on the body—such as moles, freckles, and other beauty marks—to identify any concerning discoloration, shape, or size.

“Having a skin screen yearly, allows us to look at you as an individual, especially if you’re an outdoor worker or someone who is regularly exposed to sunlight, to identify from one year to the next any changes in your marks,” said Daria Keyser, DO, General Surgeon, Surgical Specialists of Evangelical.

“Our goal is to identify skin cancer potential early and remove it before it becomes more of a problem.”

For any community members interested in full body, comprehensive skin cancer screenings, those are also available on the following dates at Surgical Specialists of Evangelical, 25 Lystra Rogers Drive, Lewisburg. Appointments required.

Dates of comprehensive, full body skin cancer screens with Dr. Keyser:

  • Tuesday, May 2, 8:30-11:30 am
  • Tuesday, May 16, 1-4:15 pm

To make an appointment for any of the scheduled skin cancer screenings, call Evangelical Community Health and Wellness at 570-768-3200.
